Water Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
Poor WASH conditions in schools remain a critical public health challenge, with far-reaching consequences:
- Inadequate access to safe drinking water and handwashing facilities
- High dropout rates among girls due to lack of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities
- Limited knowledge of disease prevention among students and teachers
IHOPE Foundation’s School WASH Program
We address these challenges through evidence-based interventions in Migori County schools:
- Behaviour Change & Education
Using proven methodologies like:
- PHAST (Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation)
- CTC (Child-to-Child) approaches
- CHAST (Child Hygiene and Sanitation Training)
- Infrastructure & Awareness
- Installed handwashing stations in 30 primary/secondary schools
- Reached 2,000+ students with hygiene education
- Promoted gender-sensitive sanitation, including MHM-friendly facilities
- Sustainable Impact
- Reduced absenteeism (especially among girls)
- Improved prevention of waterborne diseases
- Created healthier learning environments aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 6 (Clean Water/Sanitation)
Why Schools Matter
Schools are powerful platforms for lasting hygiene behavior change. By empowering students as WASH ambassadors, we multiply impact in homes and communities.
