Mercury and Health

The Challenge:
Artisanal gold mining in  Siaya and Migori County poses significant health and environmental risks, particularly due to mercury exposure—a toxic substance that disproportionately affects women of childbearing age, lactating mothers, and mining communities.

IHOPE Foundation’s SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) Initiative

We work directly with artisanal miners to reduce mercury exposure and promote responsible mining practices through:

  1. Strengthening Workplace Safety
  • Advocating for consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to minimize direct mercury contact.
  • Training miners on safe handling and storage of hazardous materials.
  1. Community Education & Health Advocacy
  • Conducting awareness sessions on the dangers of mercury poisoning, targeting:
    • Miners (occupational risks)
    • Women & children (long-term health effects)
  • Promoting mercury-free gold processing alternatives to reduce environmental contamination.
  1. Policy-Aligned & Inclusive Approach
  • Partnering with Mining SACCOs, Artisanal Mining Committees (AMCs), and women’s groups under the Mining Act 2016 framework.
  • Ensuring gender-inclusive participation in training and decision-making.
  • Advocating for sustainable environmental management in mining zones.

Through integration of safety protocols, community education, and policy advocacy, we empower miners to adopt healthier, more sustainable practices—protecting both livelihoods and ecosystems.

Join us in creating a safer, mercury-free future for Migori’s mining communities!
